Hello Parents and Scouts of Troop 291,

Now that we are in 2017, we need to start planning for our summer camp.  Summer Camp is a very important part of scouting because it provides Scouts with unique opportunities to earn rank advancements, merit badges, learn skills, and most of all just have fun.

This year, we are going to Wehinahpay Mountain Camp (WMC) in New Mexico.  We will be leaving on Saturday, June 17 and returning on Sunday, June 25.     The cost of summer camp is $600 and includes the camp, food while at camp, transportation, dinners while traveling, t-shirt, etc.

We have a reservation for 32 scouts, so we need full participation.  WMC is in the scenic mountains of New Mexico at an elevation of 8,500 feet.   It will be very pleasant during the day and chilly at night which will be a great break from the Texas heat.

The camp has a trail to first class for our younger scouts and many merit badges including a few unusual ones and several required for Eagle.   In addition, they have “mountain type” experiences and some high adventure opportunities for the older scouts.   Some of these programs may have an additional nominal fee.

While traveling to and from camp, we plan to make a stop at Roswell, NM to check out the “aliens” and a stop at Carlsbad Caverns for some cave time.  We are still working out the details, but it is sure to be a good time.

Our First Summer Camp meeting will be Monday, March 13.

Our preliminary payment schedule is as follows:

1st  payment:
Monday, March 20

2nd payment
Monday, April 24

3rd and final payment
Monday, May 29
$200

If you really want to be ahead of the game, please remember that your scout will need a physical and have the BSA Medical form Parts A, B, and C completed with a shot record.  If your child goes for a physical between now and May, you may want to get this done at the same time.   You can find the BSA medical form here: http://www.scouting.org/ filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/ 680-001_ABC.pdf.  Please be sure to use the most recent form.

We are excited about going to New Mexico and this will be our first time at this camp.  Your son will have a blast at summer camp so please plan for his attendance this year no matter what his age!
